A Nova Scotia man is lucky that he didnt lose a limb, after what he thought was a mosquito bite turned out to be a bite from a suspected Brown Recluse Spider.

Stephen McKellar, of Middle Cornwall, N.S., says he noticed last Wednesday that his leg felt tender, so he looked down and saw what he described as an over-sized mosquito bite.

By Thursday, there was a large, dark red spot on his thigh the size of the baseball. His wife, Megan McKeller, says she thought her husband should see a doctor. I could tell that it was really bothering him, she said.

But McKeller refused to take his wifes advice and instead tried using the over-the-counter medication Benadryl.

McKeller said that, by Friday, it was to the point where, obviously, the Benadryl ... was not working and I got a little concerned about infections.

He finally went to the emergency room at the local hospital and a doctor ordered intravenous antibiotics. A circle was drawn around the bite to see how fast it was spreading. He says a doctor told him it was a bite likely from a Brown Recluse Spider.
