Environment Canada confirms 2 tornadoes hit southwestern Ontario Friday

Environment Canada has confirmed two tornadoes touched down in southwestern Ontario Friday night.

The weather service said in a statement that a damage assessment team confirmed an EF-2 Tornado touched down near Hawksville, Ont., near Waterloo, around 7:30 p.m.

Winds were said to have reached 180 km/h.

Farm buildings and sheds were damaged, with one anchored shed completely destroyed, the statement said. Farm equipment weighing over a ton was knocked over, including a forklift, a metal press and a grain drill.

Power lines were snapped and continuous lightning was associated with the twister.

The region also dealt with heavy rainfall after the storm slowed down.
