Toronto police identify restaurant shooting victim as real estate broker Simon Giannini

Toronto police have identified the man who died of his injuries in hospital after a shooting inside a downtown restaurant as Simon Giannini, 54.

Det. Shannon Dawsonof Toronto Police Service's homicide squad told reporters on Sunday thatGianniniwas a real estate broker in Toronto. He succumbed to his injuries in hospital overnight.

Giannini was a sales representative for Royal LePage Signature Realty, according to the company's website.

On LinkedIn, Gianniniis described as a real estate broker, host of Real Estate Intelligence TV, a best-selling author, speaker and coach. The website says he studied business and managerial economics at Ryerson University.

Dawson said policewere called toMichael's onSimcoeat 100 Simcoe St.,near Adelaide Street West and University Avenue,for a report of shooting at about 8:50p.m. on Saturday.

She said police have determined that a man entered the restaurant, made his way to the victim and shot him several times. Gianniniwas in the company of another person at the time, she said.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found the victim in the restaurant. Other patrons were in the restaurant at the time but no one else was injured.

Dawson said police believe the shooting is targeted, but Giannini was not known to police.

According to the Toronto paramedics, the victim was rushed to a trauma centre in life-threatening condition.

Giannini's death is Toronto's 41st homicide of the year.
